Why is it that some people can learn to read without any difficulty and other struggle for years only to give up in frustration? The answer is “reading skills”. Unlike spoken language reading is not natural for human beings, reading has to be learned. In order to learn to read you have to possess the prerequisite skills required to do so. It is a lack of skills that disconnects people from reading not a lack of intelligence.
For many years I have been astounded watching children attending my reading clinic in Atlanta. They would sit quietly and attend to these little hand held devices remembering every detail of the game and its characters and the different things that each one could do even the sounds that they made. And yet at the same time these same children couldn’t spell, read or write efficiently. What was going on.
What was going on was these children were learning in a new exciting way that educators are just beginning to embrace.
The more an online reading game is played the more the skill or information that it is teaching such as reading comprehension exercises or reading strategies becomes ingrained on the player and the higher their skill level will become.
Reading games can be an effective way of teaching reading strategies thereby helping children get the reading comprehension help that they need and thereby improve reading comprehension and speed.
Think of it as going to the gym for your mind.
